Workshop Overview
Unplug, get messy, and discover the magic of charcoal in this expressive drawing workshop. We’ll explore
bold mark-making, tone, texture, and gesture while loosening up your drawing style and building confidence
on the page.
You’ll be led through a series of warm-ups and creative exercises that focus on expression, embrace
imperfection and will help you get to know charcoal in its many forms. Each participant will then be guided
through setting up their own simple still life that speaks to them from an array of reference items provided.
Together we will explore the process of observing and capturing a moment in time. If you have a special item
that means something to you, you are encouraged to bring it along to be included in your still life giving you
a greater connection with your artwork
All materials are provided so you can simply show up and draw, unless you would like to bring something to
be included then please bring that. Light refreshments are included, making this a relaxed, welcoming space
to experiment, learn, and enjoy the process—no prior experience required, just curiosity and a willingness to
What We Will Do
• Introduction to charcoal (types, tools, marks, techniques) and still life (composition, lighting, texture,
pattern)
• Exploring observation and loosening up through warm ups and simple exercises
• Small study piece to practise line, form and texture bringing together learnt techniques
• Guided still life selection, set up and application with ample time to complete the artwork
• Time to share works and thoughts (optional), this is one of my favourite parts. It is a joy to see how
different the works are and all our wonderful personalities and connections shine through
