BIRDS - Jewells of the Forest
As a sculptor and a mum, making Christmas special was about celebrating
Australia’s summer bounty. For our family bush walking and gardening are popular
summer activities. So, in decorating our home I thought to bring reminders of the
forest to our living Christmas tree. I made these small colourful native birds to
decorate our tree & to give as gifts to friends and family.
The birds are made from the clay on our property, a red earthenware which I prepare
as a slip for casting. I model each of the birds from those in the forest surrounds &
who frequents the garden.
The birds are from the earth and will return to the earth if you drop them, so treat
them as glass! This way they will last centuries.
In respect to the living birds, they need a healthy habitat to raise their families too.
These are insect and seed eating species, bring them into your garden by providing
them with native vegetation & water. And bring my ceramic birds into your home to
add colour to your tree!
